Efficiency of promotional software

I would like to know the best way to actively assesss the usefulness and effectiveness of website promtion software on the market.

I don't actually feel like using any in demo stages unless I seriously want to approach submission.

I'd prefer to do submission manually to maintain control, but this could seriously cut into my life plans.
