Is 2 weeks really 2 weeks?

Many of the major search engines (i.e. Excite, etc.) say that it may take up to 2 weeks before your URL appears on their index after submitting. Is that really about how long it takes, or is that just a maximum? I submitted about a week ago and was wondering if it would be another week before it was out there?
