As long as you are offering useful info you can get good results.
Try to keep the info offered to advertising your site ratio reasonable.

Also - remember that AOL sees the normal usenet newsgroups. If you
are in a narrow niche, spending a few hours a week participating in
the relevant news groups, with a 3-4 line signature file that is a
short ad for your site or services. Participate and the traffic and
business will follow.
