A "kluge" is an awkward way of achieving something, either because the kluger doesn't know any better way or because there is no straightforward way. You will see otherwise good programmers say "I know it's a kluge, but ..." and then give a really bad chunk of code.

It is a noun or a verb, and I don't know the origin, although it is close to the Yiddish "klutz" (clumsy person).
