Firewalls?

O.K I am very confused on firewalls, I receive a few calls each day wanting to fill out my order form, but say they are behind a firewall from work. So? does this just not permit them to use my secure order form, or does it not permit them to use any type of e-mail form? If i make a simple e-mail form up with all information needed except for asking credit card info, which they can call in later, will that solve this problem? What does a firewall actually hinder i guess i am asking?
