Not seeing your file structure I can't be sure the exact problem.
Here are some things to check:
1.) Is the script saved in the root?
a.) If it is not, this is the problem.
b.) Try adding a "/" infront of the name of the script.
2.) Did you format the script properly inside the external file?
a.) You just need the script, not the
<script>
open and close.
Is this the same script that is in the head? What is this script
supposed to do?
