This drives me nuts too. Anyone who has worked with Netscape has to wonder what their engineers were thinking - especially when it comes to CSS support...that's another issue!

Anyway, I tried setting a background attribute for the nested table to "" (<table background=""> and it works. A little cleaner than dealing with extraneous transparent images IMHO, but both techniques work.
