I've been online as a sysop and user for over fifteen years. In my experience, there's a seasonal factor. For example, things slow down drastically the two weeks before Christmas; folks are busy and don't have time to even read their mail. Then the week after Christmas you have a whole slew of new folks online with their brandnew modems, typing IN ALL CAPS until someone gently suggests they not do that. The first beautiful days of warm gardening weather take folks outside. Scorching summer heat brings 'em inside. bad weather keeps them inside and online. Holidays keep them offline. etc.
