Search Engine v/s Portal

Hi
I want to know the difference between a Search engine and a Portal . How are the two different ? Is yahoo a search engine or a portal?

I tried to search for my site by giving the URL in Yahoo but got no results. Where is it better to get entry of the web-site --- On a Portal or a Search Engine ?

I have heard a lot of people visit portals. So it maybe helpful if I get my website listed on it.

Also, how different are Portal and Search Engine in working ? What do they provide? Some people call Yahoo a Portal. Please give a list of Popular Portals.

I also want to know how to make those sites list my website.
