WEB ADDRESS

Hi does anyone know why some web sites you have to use the www?

for instance:

http://yorkpennsylvania.net

http://www.yorkpennsylvania.net

I get a blank page if I try it with www. so I have been taking the www out of my bookmarks.

This isn't always, sometimes I have to use www to see certain web sites, most mine are on http://freeservers.com hosting.
