How do they know?

Does anyone know where different people get their information about different search engines?
Do search engine/directories publicly release information regarding exactly how each index/rate web sites?
I've seen many advertisements on the Internet from people claiming to know how each directory/engine works and - therefore - how to obtain a high ranking.
What are their sources or is it just trial and error?

Is there anyway to find out these things for ourselves?
