THe best way to describe linking from other websites: Imagine that you have a store front(maybe you do)and you want other retailers to refer you...What would you do? You would go to them and ask if you could place some of your flyers or Business cards on their counter and you would do the same for them.
On the Internet you simply find related websites and ask if they would like to exchange links. Don't just ask to add your site to theirs. If you have more to offer the other website, offer it. You already are link to other websites, did you ask them to return the favor.
I use a Cgi-script that lets your visitors add their site to mind while online. It does a neat job and if you get a spammer, you can delete it with the Admin feature. When new people add their site to your, you can go to their page from the link added and ask them to return the favor. The script is at http://www.onlinearts.net (it's called Lincoln Memorial)
