Any ways to speed things up?

Hey,

First off, great site. Thanks.

Now a quick question. I've got my site up and am just about ready to
start submitting it. I'm a bit worried, though, about one of the
things you mentioned. My home page is fairly long, and takes some
time to open. I don't want to get penalized by Yahoo! for this, but
on the other hand I am fairly happy with how it looks. Are there
any ways to compress pictures or other parts of the site to speed
it up. I'm pretty new to this so any info, no matter how basic,
will be much appreciated. Also, any comments on the content of
the site or about my product (I'm the inventor, too) would be great.
